Garden Tour A Success
Our expectations were greatly exceeded with the 2nd annual organic garden tour. People are totally getting it and are so incredibly interested. Volunteers and homeowners spent the day from 10am-4pm doing demonstrations and tours and fielding questions.
Attendees ranged from new to experienced gardeners, with the questions often centered around growing food, as this was an underlying theme in all of our gardens: How do you design your food gardens to be so beautiful? How do you get that much food out of such a small space? How come my corn is only half as tall?
And the answers often came back to the basics. Keep your eye on the soil, water, organic matter. Lots and lots of talk about microorganisms, which is also becoming less shocking to gardeners. "Oh bacteria? Yes, we definitely have to keep them happy". It wasn't so long ago that we were getting funny looks when we talked about these things. And with demonstrations on aerobic composting, worm composting, bokashi, and compost tea brewing, 'microorganisms' seemed to be an underlying theme as well.
Rounded out with a couple of sensational permaculture gardens, and a didgeridoo sound healing demonstration, and you have an amazingly fun and successful day.
With the passionate feedback we received, next year's tour is sure to be even better.
