Registering Biopesticides in Canada
Our program is a tutorial for how to register a biopesticide product and a road map through the PMRA requirements. We will be "walking" through the entire registration process with a number of candidate biocontrol products that we might like to see registered in Canada. At the end of the workshop, participants will have an excellent understanding of how to go about registering not only biological products, but any pest control product in Canada. This will be valuable knowledge for industry, government, consultant, and sales folks. The better we understand the process, the more efficiently we will be able to employ it. We will be led through this workshop by Dr. Imme Gerke, and Chi Tran, PMRA. A workshop like this hasn't been offered in Canada for a few years, and the most recent one was in eastern Canada. This will be a first for western Canada so don't miss your opportunity to participate.

GI LOCAL West Shore Food Summit
Location: Anglican Church of the Advent, 510 Mount View Avenue, Colwood (Victoria), B.C. (off Sooke Rd., near the Shell station)
We are facing many challenges to our present food system, which imports over 90% of the food we eat on Vancouver Island. This also creates some real opportunities for local farmers, marketers, gardeners and consumers to grow and consume more local food. The GO LOCAL Food Summit gives us a chance to come together as a local community to find ways to take action on food security. The results of our dialogue will be integrated with larger regional planning activities, such as those championed through the Capital Region's Food and Agriculture Initiatives Roundtable (CR-FAIR). The summit’s goal is to offer useful information we can act on, and to lay the foundation for a realistic, achievable local Food Security Action Plan to kick-off this year. We are inviting you to be a part of this important and exciting GO LOCAL event.
The day is divided into two sessions – depending on your interests, you can attend one session or stay for the whole day!
For more information, contact:
- Cindy Moyer, Moyer Creative Group/West Shore Chamber of Commerce (474-7390)

Certified Organic Associations of B.C. - Annual Conference & Trade Show
This year’s conference theme is “SHADES OF GREEN: MAKING ORGANICS EVEN GREENER”. Workshops in the program will address current and looming issues for farming, food security and the environment in Canada and around the world. One of the ways to ensure that there’s community involvement in these issues is to offer “eaters” the opportunity to learn about them from people who work in the “fields” producing our food. To encourage public participation, the conference planning committee has broadened the scope of the workshop offerings and has opened up some parts of the conference to the public – the reception on Friday; the Saturday workshops and films; and the banquet and Revolutionary Farmers’ Coffee House on Saturday evening. Friday evening, before the opening reception, there will be a facilitated discussion of the impact of the recently instituted Meat Regulations. On Saturday, the plenary session will feature farmers, scientists and environmentalists speaking about the environmental impacts of organic production and how we can reduce our effect on the earth even further.

Air Pollution: How We Treat the Atmosphere Like a Sewer with Douw Steyn
When most of us think of air pollution, images of factories belching smoke or vehicles leaving behind a cloud of soot often come to mind. Such conditions led to historical episodes of deadly air pollution—the most notorious being the great London smog in December of 1952 when there were approximately 12,000 excess deaths resulting from a 5-day period of intense air pollution. With growing worldwide industrialization, emissions have increased and become more widespread. The introduction of more complex fuels, and combustion occurring in a wider range of conditions, has led to growing toxicity of emissions, and increasingly evident effects on ecosystems
